Social platforms

Social Platforms

As part of my growing focus on my professional practice, as well as working on creating a website in time for me finishing my degree and starting my way in the world of work, I have felt it is necessary to create other social media accounts on platforms such as Instagram as a way of getting my work noticed or even just as a way for people to access and view my work.

In todays society, social media is forever growing and something which is used in day to day life by so many people. To not have an account where I can present my work on would be a wasted opportunity. At this stage in my career as I am just starting out, my main aim is to try and get my work seen or known. When going to job interviews or even meeting new people in the industry while I am creating my own bodies of work, quickly being able to tell someone my Instagram name is a great way of allowing people to quickly access my work and see more of what I am about, from the ease of their own phone or computer.

As can be seen here, Ive simply named my Instagram after my name, as appose to 'Elle Cain Photography'. I want to brand my work just under my name as appose to labelling my self as a photographer. I've written a short and brief 'Bio' on my page just to give viewers a quick and simple feel for what I do and what I am about. I've also linked in another social media platform which I have recently started using. I've done this because although this platform will present very similar work to my Instagram, it just gives viewers a different way of looking at the images. Instagram tends to be an app more used on mobile phones only, where the images are presented in this tiled archive and can be quite small to view even when selecting a single image to view closer. Tumblr on the other hand, is layer out more like a blog or website; something which can be better viewed on a computer and the work can be seem larger and much clearer.

On my Instagram i've chosen my most successful and recent work. Rather than uploading all the images at once, I have uploaded the images periodically, as i've started to gain more followers and viewers. This is a quick and easy app where I can upload images easily from my phone while on the go. As appose to a website where I will only updated it now and again when new strong bodies of work come through, here on my Instagram followers can get more of a personal view into my work, as I will be updating it almost daily, with a mixture of my more professional shots and just on the go iPhone shots, such as the three top images which can be see in the example above on my page.

Tumblr

Tumblr is another platform I have recently decided to start using in order to promote my work. The reason I have decided to use tumblr along side my Instagram and website which I am in the process of creating is because tumblr is a free platform in which you can chose you're entire own theme and layout. As can be seen in the images below which are print screens of my tumblr, my tumblr intact looks like what a having my own website would look like presenting my work. The only really disadvantage to a person website with my work on is not being able to have my own domain name here. Tumblr is a social media platform meaning it is interactive in the way people can reblog and repost your images, as well as 'liking' an image. Just like Instagram the concept of people being able to like your images gives you instant feed back on an image, showing you people have seen, liked and acknowledged your image. Again through using something such as Tubmlr or Instagram, this is a platform where It enables me to upload images quickly and easily either from my phone or a laptop. With tumblr, because your images can be 're-blogged' I have uploaded images being prepared that my images will be seen and could be used elsewhere other than my own profile, without my permission. To tackle this issue slightly I have made sure to only upload the lowest resolution of each image I have. A lot of my images, such as this one below, have actually been taken and edited on my phone. So they are images that I am not to protective over, and am willing to share on here if it gets me in with a chance of my work hopefully being noticed. I'll be able to upload images onto my tubmlr, such as iPhone images, that I wouldn't upload on my more professional website.

Being able to place links to social media sites such as Instagram and Tumblr on my website also will hopefully show an employer I am up to date with using social media as it is such an important aspect of peoples day to day lives this day in age. I also shows I am able to use my time to manage several platforms at once, presenting my work and connecting with others in the industry.

Just like how I intend to have my website layer out, I have used a plain white background and a very simple layout with grey and black writing. I want to make sure I can brand myself successfully and to do so I intend to have my social media platforms, website and business cards or anything else I do branded in a similar style, e.g colours, fonts ect.

Another good feature about Tumblr which I really like is the way you can either view the images one by one on the 'Home' option, like shown above or the viewer can click 'Archive' and view the images together in a layout like the one below. This will be brilliant for when I start to upload my work regularly as I produce it as it will give viewers an idea of what work is from what year or time in my career.
