Portfolio

Portfolio; Things to think about

I have recently been looking into the different aspects I need to consider when creating my own portfolio. I will need my own professional portfolio in time for leaving University. However I have come to find there are all kind of aspects I will need to consider.

For example:

Size? What size would I like my portfolio to be. I will to take into consideration the fact that all of my images are going to have to be printed the same size or will at least only be able to, at their largest, be the size of my portfolio, for example 12x16icnh.

- Taking into consideration the size of my prints, I don't tend to print very large, I feel my prints would probably be at a suitable size to show at the size of 12x16icnh.

Landscape or Portrait? I have come to learn during class that most commercial or advertising shots are portrait where as fine art shots tend to be landscape. Therefore meaning  my portfolio will need to be landscape.

During class it was discussed that the standard amount of pieces of work in a portfolio is 20-30 of your best prints.

The order in which these prints are presented are also something which I have come to learn must be took into consideration. As discussed with my tutor, many have different beliefs on what order prints should be put in, in terms of best to worst prints.

In my tutors opinion, you should start with the average work and gradually build up to the best work being in the middle of the portfolio, then slowly decreasing back to a more average standard of work.

Using the site normally used to purchase print sleeve and portfolio boxes, I have had a look at the prices they charge for portfolios. I feel leather would be most professional if I were to get my own portfolio however they do appear to be rather expensive. Although I want to be most proffesinal for future job interviews ect, I may at this moment in time have to look for a slightly cheap alternative until I am intact, earning enough to get a leather portfolio.

A much cheaper alternative I have found still using the Silver print website are these 'Prat Modebook's. These books still look professional and the reason I have chosen this one as a possible type of portfolio to use as appose to the other types is because the book has a spiral mechanism which makes it easy to take out prints and change the order of the prints in the portfolio, which I think is very important due to the fact I know i will be constantly updating my portfolio with new and improved prints.

I am glad I have started to look into this now, however I intend to actually print or start a portfolio in a couple of months as I head towards more so the end of my final year.
