Writing a CV

Writing a CV

One very important aspect of getting anywhere in an industry is a CV.

As most may be aware, a CV is something which a person uses as a summery and representation of their achievements, skills and what they're capable of doing. Presenting a CV when going for a job is something almost everyone has to do, in order to show their employer a brief summary of them as a person.

a CV no matter what the industry almost always includes:

Name

Address
Statement about ones self
Personal skills
Achievements
Qualifications
Previous jobs/ Experience

From personal experience I have written CV's before for when I have been going for a job.

My own personal understanding is that a CV should sing your praises, show yourself in a positive light, and make an employer want to employ you.

Although I have written my own person CV's before, they have more so been for part times jobs; nothing to really do with the industry I aim to work in (photography).

I have created a very brief skills based CV which I feel lists my skills and achievements in a short and precise way which is easy to read and access.

If i were to go for a specific job i would slightly change this CV to make it more accurate or so that it would link more in terms of what job i was going for and what the requirements and needs of that job may be. But this CV as i have here stands as a brief template of my achievements so far. I believe it is good practice to have a template CV made up, where you can go back and change and update your CV as and when you need to, whenever to gain more qualifications or achieve something new.

For the purpose of this blog, I have cropped out my home address and other personal information which would normally be found at the top of my CV.

One way I feel I could improve my CV from this point forward is by including any links or web addresses to my own website or digital platforms such as Instagram. I intend to do this once I have successfully got a website and other such platforms up and successfully running in the near future.

Looking at other professionals statements.

Here I have chosen to look at some other examples from professionals within this industry. On many professionals websites the section 'Bio' can be found, here a similar lay out to a short CV or just vital information about the photography can be found.

As a first example to look at I have chosen to look at the webiste of Richy Leeson, a successful photographer and past CCAD student.

Qualifications, Awards, Exhbitions and Clients are the sections which can be found here. Richy's website demonstrates exactly what we have been taught in class in terms of what to include on a CV and the short, clear and informative way we should present it.

Another example I've chosen to look at and present here is by another professional in the industry whom is linked to my college, that is my tutor, Jill Cole.

Here on Jill's website, the link 'CV' is actually there, rather than Bio. I think this idea of having a CV on your webiste is a really good idea and something I will also want to consider when I create my own website. Jill's website, just like Richy Leeson's, shows the importance of having a CV and including a CV on a website.
