Portfolio prints 12x16

Portfolio prints 12x16

As I want to produce a portfolio in time for me finishing my degree I have had to take much consideration into what size and type of portfolio I will need. I feel having a portfolio made up in time for me finishing my degree will be very beneficial in that it will be a physical copy and representation of my work which I will be able to take to interviews and anything a may need it for within the world of work once finishing my degree as appose to me just having my website or any forms of digital archives that my prints can be viewed on.

physical prints can tend to look different to digital prints. Although the world massively revolves around technologies and digital platforms in current times, I feel as a photographer it is still keep working in a style where I aim to produce prints swell as just images to be viewed digitally. I personally feel I prefer to look at physical prints in front of me as appose to looking at digital images on a screen. I therefore want to be able to offer this with my own work when meeting new people in the industry or going for job interviews.

As I feel I have pretty much come to a decision about what size portfolio is going to be most suitable for me at this stage in my career/ degree, I have now decided to get some test prints done at an appropriate size to for the portfolio. I have ordered a black and white print and a coloured print at the size of 12x16 in order to firstly see if this size is a size which is a good enough size to present my print and to secondly check the quality of the printer I'm using and to check what type of paper I would like.

The printing company I chose to use for my prints are 'DigiLab'. This company is based in newcastle and a professional and trusted company which I was recommended by my tutors and have used this company several times. I therefore know the quality of the prints are of a high and satisfactory standard as well as knowing the service is brilliant too. With Digilab being in the north east of England and therefore not far from where I live, it means I am able to actually go to Digilab to pick up my prints or to even speak to the people who work to ensure my print is exactly how I want it. Or also on the plus side, Id be able to travel there and speak to the workers or collect my work if anything were to go not to plan during the process of me ordering my prints online. This gives me peace of mind over my work as appose to ordering from a professional printing lab down south in London or somewhere not as easily assessed for example.

I took this image on my phone of the prints. No camera could really do any justice to show the quality of the prints. However the quality is something which I am satisfied with. Ive chosen to go with lustre on these prints. I would consider using gloss for different types of images, however seeing as though pretty much all of my images are of a very similar style to this, as that they are documentary style images, I felt they suited the lustre style. I personally feel colourful product shots or images such as those, look very professional in a gloss format. I almost always work with a lustre style however, as I find it usually best suits my style of photography.

I have debated and researched the way I should present my images in my portfolio as I didn't know whether I should keep all my images with only a small border or whether my images could show a variety of ways of being presented. When looking at other portfolios or examples I found that every image does not have to be presented exactly the same.

In the link above, I found a vimeo example of a portfolio which shows exactly what I have been questioning before creating my own portfolio. - 'Do all the images need to be presented in a similar way. Does the portfolio need to flow in this way.'
This portfolio shows a variety of sized images on a variety of backgrounds. Although this portfolio is a made up book as appose to a portfolio where prints can be moved around and taken out, It still shows how a portfolio needs to be creative and interesting therefore a variety in borders and images is acceptable if not encouraged.
